Animation, The Awful Truth:

Well actually it's not awful, it's just the truth.

Before the computer revolution animation had to be done by hand. Which meant painstaking hours drawing frame, after frame of art work. At 24 frames per second that means that a full minute of animation has 1440 frames of artwork. Imagine having to draw, color & lip sync all that! Then came computers, which have definitely sped up the animation process, and reduced costs.

However, animation is still the most labor-intensive and thus the most expensive art form there is. The subject matter must be conceptualized, created, and animated, going through a series of production steps that can range from just a few to several dozen. All dependant on the quality and complexity of the animation. Sometimes even camera movements must be taken into consideration. With the animation created to simulate the camera movements and angles. Unfortunately, you just can't put a camera into 2d and have it work successfully. The artwork drawn to look 3d would go flat the instant a camera moved in any direction.

An important factor we must consider is that animation is not video, it is animation. Which, is a result of a final render & has been turned into a video format for our viewing pleasure. Usually this final render only comes after many hours of labor having been put into it's creation. There is no auto-animate button on the computer, and with the amount of variation animations can take, it is doubtful there ever will be one. (Even though there is not an animator out there that at some point has wished there was.)

Animation can be as simple as moving a colored square across the screen, or as complicated as the film "Avatar". Cost a few dollars per second of animation, or many tens of thousands of dollars for that same little second of time. It's awe inspireing the amount of variance an animation can take during production, all based on the requirements of the project.
